NBC Directors Disappear As EFCC Storms Commission, Carts Away Vital Documents


The director of finance of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Patrick Areh evaded arrest yesterday, January 4.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were said to have stormed the NBC in a bid to arrest Areh and other senior officials, but they were disappointed as they met their absence, This Day reports.

It was learnt that the leadership of the commission, including the director general, Emeka Mba, might have disappeared from the premises after they got wind of the operation.

Report has it that the EFCC operatives arrived at the commission at about 11am and spent close to four hours in the premises.

A NBC source said: “They came around 11am, one EFCC officer and two others dressed in police uniform. They requested to see some people, including the Director of Finance, Patrick Areh, but the director was on leave.

“They eventually went ahead to ransack offices and arrested a staff in the finance department. I wish I knew what they were looking for; probably they were acting on a tip-off. They came and mentioned the names of the people they wanted to speak with, some of them were around, while some were not around. Eventually they spoke with some people and searched the office.”

They were said to have interviewed some officials of the commission and carted away some vital documents.

The spokesman of the agency, Wilson Uwujaren said he was not aware of any member of staff from the commission going on such operation.

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is committed to the fight against corruption. Since they took over power on May 29, 2015, over 20 prominet people have been arrested by the EFCC over corruption charges.

The anti-graft commission has been investigating the scandalous $2.1 billion arms deal for some time now and . The completion of the second phase of the probe might lead to more arrests, sources said.
