Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo state governor, expressed concern over the neglected efforts to guarantee job opportunities for Nigerians and called for re-introduction of labour unemployment centres.
Oshiomhole spoke on Tuesday at the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja while on a courtesy visit to Senator Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and employment.
Oshiomhole expressed his displeasure over the lack of accurate statistics and data needed to assist the federal government in its attempt to fight the “monstrous demon” of unemployment in the country.
He suggested reistablishing of labour unemployment centres to create opportunity for employers of labour to contact and recruit people who registered. This would also mean the registered individuals will be able to acquire training and apprenticeship.
“The centres will also give employers the opportunity to carry out regular trade test, do proper grading of skilled and semi-skilled test among others. This is one area we have neglected over the years and given the present circumstance, we need to re-establish these centres,” Oshiomhole said.
Oshiomhole called on employers of labour to inform the Ministry of Labour and Employment whenever they employ, dismiss or retrench staff in their various establishments.
He also called for the review of expatriate quota for firms and industries operating in Nigeria.
James Ocholi, the minister of state in the ministry, commended the governor for his instructive suggestion and made a pledge on behalf of the ministry to consider the advice.
